Ferrari F1 team opts softer tires for Austrian GP

Formula 1 drivers’ tyre choices for the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix have been revealed, with Ferrari opting for more sets of ultra-softs than its rivals.

Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen will take nine sets of the new-for-2016 softest compound, along with three sets of super-softs and one set of softs for the race on the first weekend of July.

The only other team to choose as many sets of the purple-marked tyres is Renault, where Jolyon Palmer has matched the choice of the Ferrari drivers, while Kevin Magnussen has taken an extra set of softs at the expense of a set of super-softs.

At the front of the grid, Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have taken eight sets of ultra-softs each, but their choices beyond that differ with Rosberg choosing more super-softs and Hamilton opting for an extra set of softs.

Williams, Red Bull and Force India – all podium finishers in recent grands prix – have only opted for seven sets of the ultra-softs for their drivers, with Valtteri Bottas taking the most super-soft sets (five) and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez the most softs (three).

F1 newcomer Haas will take the fewest sets of ultra-softs to the Red Bull Ring. Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez only selected six for their weekend allocation of 13 sets.
